The earthquake occurred in 1695 caused the destruction of almost the entire district of Contrata Carcere and its most relevant edifices. A downhill walkway still remains today. The road, a part of Via di Porta della Maestà, leads to the entrance of an impassable tunnel affected by frequent collapses. This small and winding path is lined with Etruscan caves formerly occupied by shepherds and cowherds. One of this caverns has been turned into a Chapel dedicated to the Madonna del Carcere.
